1977-78 -- INDIANA UNIVERSITY, Ph.D. program in Educational Film. Minors: Anthropology and Comparative Education. Completed three semesters of coursework, then transferred to Cornell. 1969-73 -- UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA, B.A. in American Civilization and M.S. in English Education. Experience
1993-94 -- Apprenticeship Coordinator, The Learning Web, Cornell University. Directed a youth apprenticeship program involving five junior/senior high schools. Worked closely with students, teachers, parents, administrators, social service agencies, and employers to create, monitor, and evaluate youth apprenticeships. Ran a community service program for middle grade students in three school districts. Participated in proposal and report writing. 1992 -- Senior Research Associate, Cornell Youth and Work Program, Cornell University -- Collected data (interviews, observations, and surveys) for research and development of a youth apprenticeship program; consulted with teachers and worksite mentors in their work with apprentices. 1990-92 -- On leave from Mount Holyoke College to record and tour with a musical group that signed a major label contract with MCA Records. Wrote much of the music, released two albums, and toured the U.S., Canada, and Europe. 1986-89 -- Assistant Professor and Director, Secondary Teacher Preparation Program, Mount Holyoke College. Taught: Issues in Education, The Social Context of Schools and Schooling, Adolescent Development, Principles of Curriculum Design and Instruction, and Secondary School Student Teaching (placed and supervised student teachers). Was responsible for all program communications with the State Department of Education. Was a member of the Steering Committee for the Five College/Public School Partnership; Mount Holyoke's representative in the Consortium for Excellence in Teacher Education; faculty sponsor for the student tutoring organization (Mount Holyoke students tutoring public school students in Holyoke, MA); and a member of Mount Holyoke's Academic Policy, Multi-Racial Community, and Education Curriculum Committees. Also, worked with a group of teachers in the Holyoke, MA school system to address the high dropout rate there, especially among Latino students. Developed and led a collaborative research/study group; was a consultant to a Holyoke, MA parents' group (the City Wide Parent Planning Council) concerning the dropout problem. Attended meetings, offered advice about information to gather, and helped develop strategies for action; and served as a research Consultant for a Holyoke High School science curriculum review project. Provided advice concerning the design of the study, helped analyze data, contributed to final report. 1984-85 -- Research Consultant for an Appalachia Educational Lab study of the impediments to and facilitators of disadvantaged adults' success in community college. Provided advice concerning qualitative methods, analyzed interviews, wrote major sections of the final report, led sessions at a regional conference held for the purpose of recommending changes in community college policies and programs. 1984 -- Teaching Assistant for a Cornell University field-experience-based teacher education course, "The Art of Teaching." Taught the "lab sections" of the course, lectured, led discussions, guided micro-teaching presentations and critiques, evaluated student work. 1982-83 -- Cornell University Research Assistant for a study of how college students' preconceptions and fundamental beliefs about science affect their learning of physics. Helped design, produce, and administer project surveys; organized and managed computerized analyses of survey data. 1981-82 -- Cornell University Research Assistant for a study of racial and socioeconomic bias in elementary school reading instruction. Conducted a literature search and helped design, administer, and analyze teacher and principal interviews. 1979-81 -- Research Assistant for the Cornell Institute of Occupational Education. Worked from inception to completion on a three phase study of social development in secondary vocational education programs in New York State. Reviewed relevant literature, wrote survey items, designed student and parent interviews, administered surveys, conducted interviews, scheduled data collection with school administrators, conducted the qualitative analysis of interview data, presented research reports at state conferences and project steering committee meetings, wrote sections of all final reports. 1981 -- Editorial Assistant for Dr. Kenneth Strike, Professor of Education, Cornell University. Helped edit, index, and proofread two books of educational philosophy written by Dr. Strike for publication with the University of Illinois Press and Martin Robertson Publishers. 1980 -- Graduate Assistant for Dr. Stephen Hamilton, Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, Cornell University. Conducted a literature search for and consulted in the preparation of a paper, "Youth Work Experience and Employability," for the National Institute of Education and the U.S. Department of Labor. 1978 -- Teaching Assistant for a comparative education course, "Education and Social Change," at Indiana University. Helped design course, led sections, advised students, helped design and grade exams. 1977-78 -- Curriculum Consultant for the American University Field Staff Ethnographic Film Project. Wrote instructional guides for a series of 25 anthropological documentary films, interviewed filmmakers, wrote a paper recommending ways in which the film series could be used. 1977-78 --Graduate Assistant at the Indiana University Audio-Visual Center. Evaluated ethnographic and other social science films for the Film Library Acquisitions Department, assembled panels of experts, led evaluative discussions, wrote final reviews. 1973-76 -- Head of American Folk Music Workshops. Managed and performed with a music education group which presented concerts and workshops in schools, libraries, and arts centers; consulted for Philadelphia's Bicentennial Celebration Committee. 1975-76 -- Regular substitute teacher, all subjects.
