330- 25110: The Dominican Republic Experience

Our last night in the Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo, May 2003

Recess time at a public school

Santiago, May 2003

·        The purpose of this short-term study abroad program is for students to explore the impact of culture on the psychology of the individual as well as to increase cultural awareness and sensitivity.  Each year the course has a different focus. For the 2006 course our focus will be on developmental and educational psychology. As part of the course, we will visit public and private schools, both rural and urban.  In addition, cultural views about disabilities as well as educational opportunities for children with physical and cognitive disabilities will be explored.

·        The trip to the Dominican Republic will include short lectures, visits to different organizations (schools, NGO’s, orphanages) as well as involvement in the community where we will be staying (i.e. volunteering to work in public daycare organizations, orphanages, preparing recreational activities for children, etc). This year experience will also include living with families in a rural community.
