The possessive adjective shows the number
and gender of the noun it modifies, not the gender gender of the owner.
His/her
+ noun does not work like English.
his
mother, her mother = sa mère
his
father, her father = son père
The possessive pronoun works the
same way.
his, hers (masculine) = le sien, les siens
his, hers (feminine) = la sienne, les siennes
The possessive pronoun takes the place
of the possessive adjective and its noun.
leurs cousins > les leurs
