Tous les jours il travaillait dans les champs; tous les soirs il mangeait de la soupe et du pain.

• There is only one verb with an irregular imparfait form: être [What else?!]: j'étais, tu étais, etc.

• The imperfect is used for description, habitual action (repeated, what you "used to do"), and extended action (something you "were doing" when something else "happened" [the action that "happened" would be in passé composé).

(a) Description: Il y avait beaucoup de fleurs dans le jardin. Elles étaient belles. (Nothing "happened".)

(b) Habitual action: "I used to visit my granny every Sunday." ("X" = a visit chez grand'mère)

Quand j'étais jeune [description], j'allais [used to] voir ma grand'mère chaque dimanche.

(c) Extended action: "We were having dinner (what we were doing) when the phone rang (what "happened"). The imparfait sets the scene for something to "happen" (in the p.c.).

          Nous dînions (quand le téléphone a sonné).
         Elle roulait lentement (quand l'accident a eu lieu).
          Je rentrais chez moi (quand j'ai perdu mon sac).
