• The passé composé
is used for a single completed action. It happened once. Ask
your sentence the question: "What happened?" If your verb answers
that question, use passé composé.
(a) avoir verbs: The past participle agrees with the preceding
direct object.
[To find the D.O., have your verb ask "[verb]
what?" ("Ate what?"). The answer is the D.O. ("Ate peanuts.")]
Je les ai vus. (les = D.O.) ["Saw
what?" > "Saw them." them = D.O.]
Voilà la robe que j'ai achetée.["Bought
what?" > "Bought the dress." dress
= D.O.]
(b) être verbs: The past participle agrees with the subject.
Marie est revenue.
Ils sont déjà partis.
(c) Reflexive verbs use a combination: Their auxilary is être,
but they agree like avoir, with the preceding D.O.
Elle s'est coupée. ["Cut
what?" > "Cut herself." herself is the
D.O. and it precedes.]
Elle s'est coupé les doigts. ["Cut what?">"Cut
her fingers." finger= D.O and does not precede.]
(a) is inverted for questions
As-tu étudié?
Sommes-nous arrivés?
S'est-elle endormie?
(b) gets the pronouns
Il les a mangés.
Marie? Je l'ai vue hier.
(c) gets the negatives
Marie n'est pas rentrée à l'heure.
Ils ne sont pas restés.
Elle ne s'est jamais levée avant 10h.
