Trouble Spots

BEFORE and AFTER: devant / avant, derrière / après

All four are prepositions and need an object.

• devant (before, in front of) and derrière (behind, after) both deal with placement in space, physical location. Be careful not to confuse derrière (behind) with dernière (last) .

Mettez le pronom devant le verbe. (in front of)
Le chien est derrière la maison. (behind)

• avant and après refer to time. (See a special page for each of these in the grammar index.)

Il a fini avant moi.
         (He finished before I did.)
J'ai mon cours d'anglais après mon cours de français.
         (I have my English class after my French class.)
