To borrow is to make temporary use of something that belongs to someone else.
To lend is to give temporary use of something that belongs to you.

• emprunter = borrow

Est-ce que je peux emprunter ta voiture ce soir?

• prêter = to lend

Désolé...Je ne prête jamais ma voiture.
