Trouble Spots

TO MAKE: faire, rendre

The problem is not with faire, but with using faire when we should use rendre.

faire means to make, to do, and is used in a billion idioms that you've already memorized.

Elle va faire une jolie robe jaune pour sa fête.
         [make/sew a dress]
Est-ce que tu fais tes devoirs tous les jours? Même le week-end?
         [to do homework]
Tu me fait rire!
         [You make me laugh!]
Il fait beau/froid/chaud, etc.
         [weather]

rendre means to cause someone to feel some certain way (emotions), to render.
A second meaning is to give back.
(It can also mean to vomit, but you can do without learning that right now!)

Ça me rend malade!
         [That makes me sick.]
Ah! Qu'est-ce que cet homme me rend heureuse!
[This man makes me so happy!]
Est-ce que je peux vous rendre service, madame?
[May I help you? May I render a service?]
Rends-moi mon argent tout de suite!
[Gimme back my money right now!]
Il m'a rendu un énorme service.
[He rendered me a great service.]
