to USE: user, utiliser, employer
• user means to wear out, to use up
Les enfants usent leurs chaussures très rapidement.
[Kids wear out their shoes quickly.]
N'achète pas une chemise en soie. Le soie s'use trop vite.
[Don't buy a silk shirt. Silk wears out too fast.]
• utiliser means basically the same as employer, but is "fancier" (a higher register in communication). Use it only when you would say "utilize" in English (instead of "use"). BEWARE: English spells it with a -z-, French with an -s-.
Il faut utiliser toutes les ressources possibles pour ce projet.
• employer is the most ordinary sense of "to use; to make use of."
N'employez jamais ce mot--il est vulgaire!
