• Game Diary - one way to design better games is to play and study existing games. For the first part of this semester we want you to post to the class blog your notes on at least one game per week. Include a general description of the game and your reaction to it. Then look closer at the part of the game relevant to the topic of the week (for instance, if we're talking about rules in class that week, then look at the rules of the game and how they affect your reaction to the game.) Each week as students post, the blog will have notes and observations about a wide variety of games - be sure to read through them. This will let you learn about more games and also how different consumers react to games. We expect you to post weeks 2 to 6 (so 5 posts). Feel free to post more often. The more we know about how other games implement these basic game features, the better our games can be.

  • Game Design and Implementation - this is the big project for the semester. It has multiple parts
    1. Game ideas presented in class in week 4 and week 7
    2. Completed Game Design Document
    3. 2 levels of the game with audio and possibly video cut scene
    4. Compiled levels and written instructions for someone else to play
    5. Post-Mortem - what went right, what went wrong, player reactions to the game, how you'd act in response to those reactions, what would you do next --- a written paper, with screen shots, user reactions
