Kara Hutchinson: Ethics in Public Relations and Journalism with Wenmouth Williams, Mead Loop, Jerry Engel

During my freshman and sophomore years at IC I had the opportunity to participate with three communications professors as a research assistant for their national study on ethics in public relations and journalism. I assisted professors Jerry Engel, Mead Loop, and Wenmouth Williams in conducting a study of journalists and public relations professionals to determine attitudes and practices regarding ethical practices in their organizations and professional experiences.

At the end of the fall 2004 semester I used the study results to write a paper on our research and its preliminary conclusions. I was selected to present my paper at the 2005 Rochester Institute of Technology Conference on Undergraduate Research in Communications in April. I traveled to RIT with professors Engel and Williams to give a presentation on my topic and hear presentations by fellow undergraduates on several communications topics.

This was a fantastic experience for me, from participating in a research project, to writing an academic paper, and presenting my research in front of my peers and professors. The work was demanding and the presentation nerve-racking, but I learned so much about research and public speaking that I could never have understood without such a hands-on experience. I would recommend participating in such an experience to any student who has the opportunity. There is nothing so valuable as complementing classroom learning with real world application.
