Short Answer/Essay
Here are the ten possible short answer questions - 5 of them will be on the test. They're worth 10 points apiece. Remember - details are good. definitions are good. Pronouns are usually bad. Examples are good. You don't have to use complete sentences - just complete thoughts. We'll go over questions on Friday if you have any.
- Why do we need to understand aspects of media technology in order to understand the influences digital media may have on our lives?
- Name a benefit and a drawback to the growing prevalence of nontraditional news sources, such as blogs, special interest websites, niche newsletters.
- Describe the difference between public relations and advertising define, give some examples. What do they have in common?
- Ithaca College wants to make 2 print ads one for potential freshmen and one for the parents of potential freshmen. Think the AIDA acronym we discussed for advertising. What would you put in each ad that would appeal to the 2 different audiences for each letter of the acronymn?
- Describe the libertarian theory of international mass communication
- What is Bollywood and what is its relationship to cultural imperialism?
- We talk about the different functions media can fill. Describe what functions entertainment media can play in society? Which do you think is most important and why?
- Think about the Launch.com radio stations. They play ads. What do they do currently for the first A in the AIDA acronym (notice Išm not givng away what they mean there might be a multiple choice question about that).
- We talked about how we use surfing as a metaphor for using the internet and the information superhighway as a metaphor for the internet itself. Now wešre talking about ŗradio˛ on the internet. Does radio serve as a good metaphor for what launch.com allows you to do? Why or why not?
- Wešve talked about lots of different media. Wešve talked about lots of kinds of content including entertaining and journalistic. Then we talked about how in the US we have decided to have advertising to help pay for it (along with subscriptions,newstand sales, and such), especially broadcast television. But viewers are not watching that kind of television like they used to.Describe one thing advertisers could do and one broadcasters could do to improve the situation. Be bold be creative maybe they do something to attract viewers, or to not turn off viewers, or some other new funding stream.
And here's the extra credit short answer - worth 5 points. Give it a shot. Go for partial credit if nothing else.
- What would you say to media critics who say that entertainment media has a resopnsibility to convey prosocial messages. Why?
