This is a newly revived interest of mine. I just finished reading DarkNet by JD Lasica. I got all excited about the idea of people creating media. I've been following some of the blogs about citizen journalism. I started out grad school looking at online communities - one great way to create community is to share things you've created, things like music and photos and stories and videos. I also studied digital libraries - how do you organize all kinds of stuff and what kinds of features do ya need to support the social tings that go on in libraries. Personal media creation just seems like a natural extension of all that earlier work. Traditional media is having problems figuring out what to do to make money in the future. Lasica suggests that if they opened up their content they might actually make more money than they are now; I want to play around with that idea with the students here at Ithaca College in the Television-Radio department of the Park School of Communication. I'm going to be making some podcasts using the creative commons music. I also want to play around with editing the available video and combining it with music and animation. Just for fun. And because I know the students want to do this stuff too - so I'd like to be able to understand what they're talking about.
