Product and Competition Assignments

Below are descriptions of the assignments to help you learn about your product and its competition. The first three are individual assignments. The other is a group paper and presentation.

These assignments go with the following objectives for the class:

  • To be able to support target audience selections using demographic, media and brand usage data
  • To read and use industry trade journals to be informed on current topics in the field
  • To locate and use data to research products, potential target audiences, and potential media markets
  • To become better writers in a variety of styles and for a variety of audiences

  1. What's in our Fridge - Monday Week 4
    • Post your pictures to the pool by Wednesday
    • Analyze all the pictures and come up with a story - something more exciting than college students should probably all be going to ALcoholics Anonymous meetings
    • Write up your story - use examples from the pictures - be specific - in a page or two.
  2. Trade Journal Article summary - Due Wednesday of Week 4
    • Another source of information about products and audiences is trade journal and newspaper articles. The goal of this assignment is to get you used to looking to the industry trades for information. I want you to write a 2-3 page summary of at least 10 articles.
    • Look for what the industry is saying about your product and its competitors. Have there been any problems recently, any new features announced?
    • You must use industry trade journals - travel industry, media, college. You can not use websites or newspapers or blogs - mostly because I want you to get used to using the best info possible and because blogs are in another assignment. Explore the wonderful world of trade publications.
    • Be sure to include a reference page - that does not count as one of the 3-5 pages.
