Syllabus Spring 2006

Objectives Met by This Assignment

  • Be able to find and understand academic research articles in mass communication related academic journals.
  • Evaluate and discuss current research findings in a variety of mass media fields

Each Monday I want you to email me a one-page summary of each week's readings. This will help everyone keep up to date on the readings and make for better in class discussions. I need to have it before 9am on Monday - each week. You need to do 10 of them - so in total that will be 100 points. This is the same as a test. So take them seriously; don't skip weeks because there is no way to make these points up. I won't take them late. One purpose of the assignment is to give you practice wrting bout the readings. This is the kind of writing you will need to do in your papers and on exams. I will write comments on the papers, more at hte beginning and less as we go through the semester. So look at hte comments I make on your papers each time to you can do better.

Each summary is worth up to 10 points. Here's what I'm looking for in the summary to get the full 10 points.

  • enough detail about each article that I can tell you read the whole article (and not just the first and lst paragraph)
  • some connection to previous class readings and discussion - this is especially important as the semester goes along.
