Camera Skills Study Guide

  • Based on the camera checkout testing at PPECS, inclass demonstration and practicing with the camera and owners manual, you will be expected to demonstrate the follow camera skills:

  • I have noted the page in the camera operation manual that deals with most of these issues.

    • Unpack and set up camera, load tape, battery, etc. (pp. 13, 15)

    • Be able to properly set up a tripod and mount the camera

    • Know how to set the camera up for AC power. (p. 12)

    • Be able to white balance the camera manually (p. 46)

    • Identify the input for external microphones (p. 52)

    • Identify the input for external headphones. (p. 10)

    • Operate the manual focus (p. 22)

    • Properly focus a shot manually (as discussed in class).

    • How do you manipulate the exposure to handle a backlit scene (technique from class discussion as well as the camera function) (p. 20). Manual iris control (p. 48). Locking the exposure level (p. 49).

    • What is the zebra stripe function for? How do you activate/deactivate it? (p. 50)

    • How do you access and use the menu system? (pp. 63-66)

    • Explain how to activate the image stabilizer (p. 26)

    • How and under what conditions do you set the neutral density filter? (p.62)

    • Explain how to activate the built-in microphone's electronic windscreen (aka windcut) (p.65)

    • Explain how to set the camera up for 16 bit audio recording. (GL1 p. 53) (GL2 p. 56)

    • Describe at least one way to verify proper recording ("record review") without introducing noise to the recording. (pp. 20,  33)

    • How do you playback a tape? (pp. 27, 28)

    • How do you listen to the playback of a tape (p.27)

    • How to you protect a tape from accidental erasure? (p. 15)

    • How do you handle condensation on a camera? (p. 72)

    • Properly pack up the camera equipment.(p. 32)

    • Know how to charge the battery. (p.13)
