Dr Peyi Soyinka-Airewele:

Peyi Soyinka-Airewele is an Assistant Professor of African Politics at Ithaca College, New York and the Director of the Alliance for Community Transformation (ACT Africa), a not-for-profit international organization engaged in the process of socio-economic and political transformations in African countries. She received her doctorate in 1994 from the University of Birmingham in the United Kingdom but had earlier studied in Nigeria, graduating Summa Cum Laude from the University of Ife, Nigeria, with a Bachelors in International Relations in 1986 and a Masters degree in 1988. She has published extensively on issues related to transitional democracies in African countries with a focus on the politics of memory, identity, violence and women’s empowerment and was recently invited to participate in the Oxford Roundtable on Women’s Leadership.

Her research has been supported by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, the Global Security and Cooperation Program (GSC) of the Social Science Research Council, Ithaca College and other agencies. Dr Soyinka-Airewele is involved in several initiatives within areas of protracted conflict, including direct relief efforts and longer term projects. She continues to work closely with universities in African countries, such as the Obafemi Awolowo University in Nigeria where she has helped to establish PACT-OAU (Partnership of the Academy and Community), a program that transforms the role of the academic community in actively addressing the challenges of poverty and marginalization and fostering a culture of meaningful and collaborative struggles for rights, socio-economic empowerment and sustainable peace.
