Admission and Audition Information
The School of Music
admission information
page has complete details of procedures and requirements for admission.
The following are
audition requirements for the classical guitar program:
- Three pieces
from the concert repertoire and from contrasting eras (e.g., works by
Milan, Dowland, J. S. Bach, Weiss, Sor, Giuliani, Carcassi, Aguado,
Tarrega, Villa-Lobos, Brouwer, Ponce).
- Scales (two
and three octaves); arpeggio exercises for the right hand; slurs and
trills for the left hand. Sight-reading. Performance from memory is
not required but encouraged. Note: All guitarists must audition on nylon
string classical guitar. Guitarists auditioning for the B.M. in the
jazz studies degree program must, after completing the classical audition,
perform three standard jazz pieces (e.g., Parker, Ellington, Davis)
on the electric instrument. Both the classical and jazz auditions may
take place during the same scheduled time.
