Greetings!

I have been on the faculty of the Park School of Communications since 1984. As you can see from my Web site, I have a variety of interests, many of which began when I was a student. These include politics, photography, history, films, art and design, music, and travel. See my lists of favorite places, books, films, and CDs to get an idea of my interests. My book, Posters, Propaganda, and Persuasion Around the World and Through History, which is a multidisciplinary look at communication media in election campaigns, with an emphasis on posters, was published in fall 2008. It won the Park Faculty Writing Award in 2010.

I have enjoyed teaching courses on communication campaigns, presentation media design, promotional and instructional video, research and evaluation, consulting, and visual design to both undergraduate and graduate students at Ithaca College. I just finished a term as the chair of the Department of Strategic Communication. In Summer 2011, I will teach a new online course, Introduction to Political Campaign Communication, which I just developed for Ithaca College.

I served as President of the Media Design and Production Division of the Association for Educational Communications and Technology, was on its Board of Directors for three terms, and was editor of its newsletter. I also served on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Visual Literacy and am on the Board of Directors of the International Visual Literacy Association. I believe very strongly in the importance of good design in communications, and have given many presentations on this topic.

In addition, I like doing research. I have published numerous articles on visual design, propaganda, political communication, posters, media utilization, music sound tracks, burnout in the workplace, sex-role stereotyping in the media, interactive museum exhibits, and instructional development. In 2010, I was honored with the International Visual Literacy Association's Research Award.
