STUDENT EMPLOYMENT OFFICE HOURS
Monday to Friday
9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Staff members at the Student Employment Office provide information and assistance to students who work at Ithaca College. We strive to facilitate successful placements for all interested students.
An employment award in a student's financial aid package is determined through the annual application for financial aid known as the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). An employment award is an offer, not a guarantee, of a job. Awards typically provide approximately 10 to 12 hours of work per week. Students are paid every two weeks, usually by direct deposit to a designated bank account anywhere in the United States. The employment award is not credited to a student's account. Students who did not file a FAFSA must wait until October 1 to obtain campus employment.
Incoming first-year students are assigned to our largest employer, Dining Services, after attending an orientation session and completing the paperwork described below. This process provides a smooth transition for the large number of students entering the college with employment awards and also permits students to begin working immediately. This initial placement is the only one assigned to students; students may access the JobShop database to find and apply for future work-study positions.
In the spring semester, first-year students who qualify for federal work study may wish to be placed in our off-campus community service program, which provides employment with nonprofit agencies in the Ithaca area. The number of placements is limited, and referral by the Student Employment Office is required.
Before any job placement can occur, however, first-time employees must complete the following:
A student employment information session is held for students during check-in at orientation. The I-9 form is a U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) document that may be completed during this session. The W-4 and IT-2104 forms can also be completed then. Specific original documentation is required to complete these forms, however. Please see the list of USCIS acceptable documentation and additional instructions on the federal guidelines page.
Students who complete these forms during orientation will be notified during the summer if a position is available in Dining Services and will be able to begin work at the start of the fall semester. Students who complete the forms at the start of the academic year will experience delayed job assignments and may find that there are no positions available.
Please note Ithaca College's policy that while classes are in session, students are limited to working 20 hours per week, which includes all Ithaca College employment.
