Jury Prize: The Texas Border

The Texas Border

Joana Moll (Spain) and Heliodoro Santos (México)

Broadcasting live video from the BluServo network of surveillance cameras along the Texas (United States) border with México, The Texas Border documents failed attempts to cross this geopolitical border resulting from reports from BluServo’s users to the Texas Border Sheriff’s Coalition.

Advertising itself as a ‘public-private partnership that deploys Virtual Community Watch’, BlueServo is a real-time surveillance program that outsources the police work of regulating ‘drug and human trafficking’ to untrained users as a social-networking activity.

The Texas Border visualizes ways that BluServo trains users to become vigilante hunters who manipulate mediated images in a videogame-like interface.
