Low Brass Performance and Pedagogy for the Music Educator
(MUED-69705-31)

New and seasoned music educators alike often express the sentiment “I wish I had been more involved in my secondary instrument classes.” This course is designed to renew participants’ abilities to play and teach the low brass instruments – trombone, euphonium, and tuba. Students will have a chance to discuss pedagogical sequencing and materials for beginning players through high school age, focusing on areas of embouchure, technique, breath, articulation, equipment, and literature. Strong emphasis will be placed on developing performance skills for the participants as well as fostering pedagogical skills through peer-teaching. 1.0 credit. Chad West.

Developing Vernacular Musicianship
(MUED-69706-31)

Contemporary calls for reform in music education have challenged educators to expand beyond the traditional curriculum. This course is designed to allow students the opportunity to explore informal music learning practices, contemporary ensembles, and the development of vernacular musicianship. Students will gain experience covering, arranging, and composing their own songs and using garage band technology. Creativity and improvisation will be emphasized throughout the course. The course will include a combination of lecture, discussion, modeling, and small group performances. 2.0 credits. Dan Isbell.

K-8 General Music Methods, Materials, and Curriculum
(MUED-69707-31)

For the instrumental and vocal music educator seeking a comprehensive understanding of pedagogical techniques and materials appropriate for general music in a K-8 music curriculum. Students enrolled in this course will gain knowledge and insight into the commonly used methods/approaches of Kodály, Orff-Schulwerk, and Dalcroze-Eurhythmics and learn how to incorporate them into the K-8 general music classroom. Course activities will include creating lesson plans and activities that engage aural, visual, and kinesthetic learners; discovering resources that represent a variety of repertoire (multicultural, American folk, classical, popular, 21st century, etc.); playing and composing with classroom instruments; incorporating technology; learning to utilize in-class teaching episodes; and generating ideas for year-long curriculum. More specifically, students will leave this course with ready-to-use lesson plans, activities, and curricular ideas for the K-8 general music setting. 2.0 credits. Emily Mason.
