ITHACA, NY — Area high school, college and graduate students and others interested in working in the sport industry are invited to the annual “Careers in Sport Symposium” to be held at Ithaca College on Saturday, Oct. 10. Held during the college’s Alumni & Homecoming Weekend, the half-day event will start with a breakfast and networking session at 8:30 a.m. and kick off at 9 a.m. with a keynote address by Robert G. Driscoll, associate vice president for athletics at Providence College.

Taking place in Textor 102 and other classrooms in Friends Hall, the symposium will draw more than a dozen successful Ithaca College alumni who have made their marks in the sports business. In addition to the public relations manager for the Watkins Glen International Speedway, the event will be attended by the webpage editor for the New York Giants and community relations officials for the Giants and the New York Rangers. The breakout sessions will feature discussions on a number of topics, including the business end of professional and college sports and the role of sport media. Free and open to the public, the symposium will end at 12:30 p.m.

“We are pleased to honor Robert Driscoll, one of Ithaca’s own, for the exemplary leadership he has shown in shaping the direction of the Providence College program”, said Ellen Staurowsky, professor and graduate chair in the department of sport management and media. “During his eight-year tenure at Providence, the athletics program has undergone unprecedented growth in several areas, including academic and athletic performance, fundraising, facilities and community involvement. Driscoll has worked tirelessly to create one of the most respected NCAA Division I athletics programs in the country.”

In recognition of his accomplishments, Driscoll was named the 2007–2008 Astro Turf Athletics Director of the Year for Division I Northeast Region at the 43rd National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Annual Convention.

“Students aspiring to pursue careers in the sport industry, whether they are currently in high school, college or graduate school, will have an opportunity to hear about the experiences and insights of an inspiring sport executive who has a compelling message,” Staurowsky said. “We encourage students on our own campus to attend and welcome participation from students throughout the region to join us.”
