Call for Papers (Established Scholars/Graduate Students)- Submissions Due September 15, 2008
Scholars, graduate students, public policy makers, activists, and sport industry leaders are invited
to submit papers, proposals for workshops or sessions, or poster abstracts addressing one or more of
these themes:

Heterosexism in sport/homophobia in sport

Experiences of gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, and transgender athletes, coaches, administrators, sport
journalists, and others working within sport
-
Legal issues associated with sex and sexual orientation discrimination in sport
-
Public policy issues associated with sex and sexual orientation discrimination in sport
-
Activism around issues of sport, sexuality, and culture
-
Media, sport, and sexuality
-
Intersectionalities around gender, race, sexuality, and sport
-
Gender violence and sport
-
Reconceptualizing the culture of sport
-
Representations of LGBT athletes in the culture and in sport culture
-
Addressing issues of sexuality, sport, and culture in the classroom, in the workplace, or on athletic
teams.
This conference is funded through the Ithaca College President’s New Initiatives Fund and is a
collaborative effort on the part of the Department of Sport Management and Media in conjunction with
the Center for Lesbian, Gay, Transgender, and Bisexual Education, Outreach, and Services, and the
Department of Athletics with the endorsement of faculty from cinema and photography, communications,
health policy studies, health education, recreation and leisure services, sociology, psychology, sport
psychology, and women’s studies.
Abstract Format and Submission:
Line 1: Type of session preferred (choose from among the options below):
• 20-minute oral presentation (plus 5 minutes for Q & A)
• 65-minute teaching symposium, roundtable, or workshop (these sessions should generally include
2 to 4 speakers and abstracts should be clear about the role of each speaker in the proposed session)
• 65-minute forum (2-3 papers with a discussant, including questions)
• Poster presentation.
Line 2: three or four keywords that will help the program coordinator schedule
similar topics in succession
Line 3: author(s) and institution(s) names (centered on page)
Line 4: presentation title (centered on page)
Line 5: blank
Line 6 to end: text of abstract should be limited to 200 words.
Abstracts will be reprinted and published in the Conference Abstracts and published on the conference
webpage as submitted. Thus, it is imperative that these guidelines be considered prior to
submitting. Due to the difficulty in reading files, please do not use bold or
italics. The simpler your submission is, the easier it will be to convert into a publishable
form. Previously published or presented work may be considered but must be designated as such at
the time of submission.
Implicit Agreement To Attend Conference:
Submission of abstract(s) indicates the intent of presenter(s) to register for the conference at the
appropriate conference fee and to be available to present March 18-20, 2009.
Submission Procedure:
Please submit your abstract to Ellen J. Staurowsky, Ithaca College at sscc@ithaca.edu with full
contact information where you can be reached (name, mailing address, office or cell phone, fax number,
and email address).
Review Process:
Paper will be submitted to blind, peer review. Review criteria include:

relevance or significance of topic.

reference to conceptual framework or methodology.

quality of analyses.

consideration of implications where appropriate.
