Sport, Sexuality, and Culture Conference-March 18-20, 2009

Undergraduate Students: Call For Proposals - Submissions Due December 15, 2008

One of the purposes of this conference is to create an opportunity for undergraduate students (both athletes and non-athletes) to play a key role in the dialogue through panel discussions, workshops, and presentations.  We encourage and welcome your proposals.  Depending on number and quality, some submissions may be selected for oral presentations and others for poster presentations.

What kind of work might qualify?  Work done for:

  • A class project
  • A class writing assignment
  • An independent study/reading/research project
  • A seminar course.

When you say work, what do you mean?  Work can include writing or other creative form that has some level of research that substantively and knowledgeably addresses a specific topic.  Proposals generally fall into these categories:

  • Papers
  • Manuscripts
  • Reports
  • Creative projects (photo essays, video documentaries, for example).

What criteria will be used to review my proposal?

  • Relevance of the proposed topic to the conference theme
  • General adherence to a scholarly format
  • Logical organization of the submission
  • Substantive treatment of the topic
  • Appropriate referencing and citation.

What format should I use?

  • Submissions should be 4 to 6 pages in length, word processed and double-spaced using 12 pt. font with one inch margins. (This is the length for the proposal; finished papers for presentation should run approximately 12-20 pages in length, including references.)
  • Your submission should include a cover page with the following information:
    • Author’s name, address, phone number, email address
    • Name of college or university
    • Name of faculty member who served as advisor or teacher of course (if applicable and appropriate)
  • Proposals should conform to an existing academic citation system.  Some of the most familiar citation systems or styles include APA, MLA, or Oxford.  Use the style you are most familiar with.

For those submitting creative works (video documentaries, photo essays), please submit in the form that best showcases your work.  If you are unclear on how to send the document or piece, contact Dr. Staurowsky (see below for details) to work out the specifics.
