Colorectal Cancer Awareness

Colorectal Cancer...........
       Don’t Die of Embarrassment!!!!

                     Or Fear !!!!

March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

It is time for us to revisit our quest to prevent CRC disease at Ithaca College we started since 2006. The national data still shows that CRC is the 3rd leading cause of death in the United States. In New York, although white males are more likely to be diagnosed with CRC, Black males are more likely to die from it.  Males in general are more prone to having the disease as well as dying from it than females. However, for both males and females, this is the 3rd leading cause of cancer deaths.

Therefore, all of us who are above 50years of age and those who have family history of cancer should consider screening for colorectal cancer even if they are 50.  Please go to: http://www.cancer.org/docroot/home/index.asp for more information.

We have the power to prevent diseases and promote health. But did you know that seven individuals are diagnosed with cancer in Tompkins County, each week? And that three of these people eventually will die from the disease? (Source: New York State Cancer Registry)

Cancer is the 2nd leading cause of death in the United States and the number one cause of death for the people between 45 to 85 years of age. Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the major forms of cancer that can be detected early, and so, be easily and successfully treated. Yet it is the only type of cancer for which mortality rates have not decreased, because the rate of screening is significantly lower than other forms of cancer - nationally, statewide, and in Tompkins County.
