COURSE OBJECTIVES:
This course was designed to meet the needs of Occupational and Physical Therapy majors who require a full year of biology for their professional programs. It is appropriate for other students in Health Sciences and Human Performance as a general biology requirement. It also meets the general education science requirement (2a) of the School of Humanities and Sciences.
As a foundation course this will give you the background information you will need in more advanced courses such as: anatomy, physiology, neuroscience, pharmacology and nutrition. In addition to preparing you for the courses ahead it will help you in your daily lives when faced with decisions that require you to have a basic understanding of biology. Can we slow the aging process? How do we evaluate claims made by the media concerning herbal supplements? How can we make informed decisions regarding treatment options for a variety of medical conditions? We will cover a wide range of topics in this class that will help you on your way to answering these and other questions.
We will discuss the structure of cells, how cells produce and use energy, how they reproduce, and how inheritance works. Next we study animal structure and function including nervous systems, muscles, respiration, digestion, circulation, endocrine control and homeostasis. The laboratory exercises will reinforce these concepts.
