One program is based on coastal and estuarine systems (Duke University Marine Laboratory via the Marine Science Education Consortium - MSEC) and one program is based on the open ocean (Sea Education Association) .

Duke University Marine Laboratory (DUML)

Affiliates of DUML form the Marine Science Educational Consortium (MSEC). The consortium currently consists of 26 liberal arts colleges including Allegheny, Kenyon, Amherst, Mount Holyoke, and Smith Colleges.

Students typically take 4 courses during the fall or spring semester or 1-3 courses during the summer. DUML offers a wide range of courses. Students gain field experience with the biology of coastal systems, mainly at Beaufort, North Carolina; although during the spring semester, students have the option of going to Bermuda for half of the semester. One of the courses may be independent study (except for those going to Bermuda) where the student does independent research under the supervision of one of the 10 faculty members at the Laboratory.

DUML professors often help place students in professional and graduate programs such as the Coastal Environmental Management professional master’s degree at the Nicholas School for the Environment at Duke University.

SEA is associated with Boston University but also has 17 formal affiliates including Hamilton College and Cornell, Rice, and Colgate Universities. This program is interdisciplinary and involves not only living on, but actually sailing a 130-foot sailing ship. Original research on board appears to be an integral part of the coursework. On shore, students have access to the library at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute / Marine Biology Laboratory.
