Lesotho 1987 - 2004

What follows are a few photos that I took on a series of trips to Lesotho beginning in 1987. I went there at that time with my friend and colleague David Himmelgreen. We were visiting a friend who we had met as graduate students at the State University of New York at Buffalo, Michael Matsumunyane. Dave and I were studying anthropology, Mike was studying engineering. We became friends over many pitchers of beer and platters of chicken wings. Mike became a companion on fishing expeditions, canoe trips, hikes and just hanging out. When Mike returned home, he insisted that Dave and I come and visit him. We did and both of us fell in love with Lesotho so much that we chose it as the site for our dissertaion research. Mike was later killed in a minor automibile accident. Had he had a seat belt on that day he would most likely still be her. Please wear your seatbelt.

Dave and I have a long history of research in Lesotho, and we have been joined by his wife, Nancy Romero-Daza. We are currently collaborating with scholars from the National University of Lesotho in putting together an intervention and research project on HIV/AIDS there.
