ITHACA, NY— Michael Malpass, professor of anthropology, has been awarded the rank of Charles A. Dana Professor in the Social Sciences at Ithaca College. The appointment was made in recognition of his excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship, and for the significant contributions he has made to the college. The Dana professorship program is supported by an endowment from the Charles A. Dana Foundation.

An anthropologically trained archaeologist, Malpass has major interests in South American prehistory, ethnohistory, prehistoric agricultural systems, complex societies, and teaching techniques in anthropology. He maintains an active research program in Peru, where he is currently involved in studies of the early occupants of the south Andes. He wrote and edited two books on the Incas, “Provincial Inca: Archaeological and Ethnohistorical Assessment of the Impact of the Inca State” and Daily Life in the Inca Empire,” as well as a number of journal articles and other publications.

“I love to teach and interact with students and have taken IC students on my research in Peru many times,” Malpass said. “I find anthropology a fascinating field, and try to impart that interest to my students. I emphasize collaborative teaching and learning in my classroom, with the expectation that students be active learners.”

Before coming to Ithaca College in 1989, he taught at the College of William and Mary, St. Lawrence University and Washington and Lee University. He holds a doctorate and a master’s degree in anthropology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary.
