Department Information

Facilities

In January 1993, the biology department moved into a state of the art $20,000,000 science building. The department now has the facilities to support sophisticated experiments in its teaching laboratories. In addition, each biology faculty member has a personal laboratory where students work while carrying out their own research projects.

Faculty in the biology department have also competed successfully for federal funding in the last several years. These grants have been used to update the plant growth facilities and to modernize the laboratory portion of the required genetics course.  Recently the department received a corporate donation of $150,000 to purchase equipment needed to update instruction in biochemistry and cell and molecular biology. As a result, students routinely have access to equipment normally available only to graduate students and faculty. These include thermal cyclers for PCR, fluorescence microscope, environmental rooms, computerized image analysis and GIS equipment.
