Susan Swensen's research has been published this month in Science, the world’s leading journal of original scientific research, news, and commentary, published by the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Susan is even on the cover!
Susan’s team examined the extraordinary diversity in a group of tropical herbivorous fruit flies in their paper, “Hidden Neotropical Diversity: Greater Than the Sum of Its Parts.” Scientists have explained the diversity of herbivorous insects as a direct function of plant species diversity and insect specialization. These flies live on plants in the pumpkin family and specialize on different parts of the plant; some species feed and lay eggs on male flowers and other species feed on female parts of the plant and lay their eggs there.

Garry Thomas (Anthopology) and Jason Hamilton (Biology) presented a poster entitled "Towards Sustainability as 'Second Nature' at Ithaca College: The Multiplier Effect of an NSF Curriculum Development Grant," at a conference on "Sustainability and Higher Education," co-sponsored by Education for Sustainability's Western Network and Second Nature in Portland, Oregon. October, 2004.
The poster was co-authored by other members of the NSF Applying Science to Sustainability grant coordinating team, Susan Allen-Gil (Biology), Liz Walker (Director of EcoVillage), and Elan Shapiro (Educational and Outreach Director of EcoVillage). The conference focused on the connections between sustainability and higher education - from teaching and research to campus operations, facilities, and community outreach - and explored how colleges and universities could be transformed into models of sustainability.
