National Communication Association Honors Ithaca College Professor
ITHACA, NY — The National Communication Association (NCA) has honored Bruce Henderson, professor of communication studies at Ithaca College, with its Lilla A. Heston Award for Outstanding Scholarship in Interpretation and Performance Studies. The award was presented to Henderson at the annual meeting of the NCA in New Orleans.
The award is the NCA’s highest recognition for scholarship in performance studies. Henderson was cited for bringing together disability studies with performance studies as well as for his sustained body of work in the field. The award is named in memory of Lilla A. Heston, the late professor and chair of performance studies at Northwestern University.
Honored by the college in 2009 with a Faculty Excellence Award, Henderson has served as chair of the Department of Communication Studies (formerly Department of Speech Communication) and coordinator of the culture and communication program and health communication minor.
Henderson is the coauthor of the textbooks “Learning to Perform: An Introduction” and “Performance: Texts and Contexts” and coeditor of “Understanding Disability Studies and Performance Studies.” He was recently named coeditor of the journal “Disability Studies Quarterly” and previously served as editor of “Text and Performance Quarterly.”
