New "Stay for Five!" program attracts students interested in elementary education to Ithaca College
The Education Department announces the start of a new program for students interested in pursuing elementary education. Called "Stay for Five!" incoming freshmen can declare their interest in elementary education at the same time they select a major. Earn your bachelor's degree in four years in the discipline of your choice and complete the pre-professional elementary education core at the same time. Maintain a 3.0 GPA throughout your program, complete the midpoint review successfully, and at the end of your junior year, you can apply early for our one-year intensive graduate program in childhood education once you have completed your bachelor's degree. Graduate tuition is low and competitive and graduate assistanships are available to qualified students.
Research clearly shows that college graduates will change jobs and careers an average of six times throughout their lives. This new 4 plus 1 program recognizes this reality and offers students the opportunity to be prepared for their future - wherever it may bring them. As part of the pre-professional elementary core, students will have the opportunity to take several education courses, attend all Education Department student functions, and complete several field placements in area schools. It is a great way to ease into the graduate teacher certification program while working on your undergraduate degree to broaden your options after graduation. And, since all teachers need to earn a master's degree within a stated time period, you'll have that completed when you leave Ithaca College.
