ITHACA, NY—A daylong symposium and exhibition focusing on the “greening” of the health-care delivery system in the Finger Lakes region will be held at Ithaca College on Saturday, September 15. Cosponsored by Sustainable Tompkins and the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, the “Health and Sustainability Conference” is intended for health-care providers as well as planners, elected officials, educators and businesses interested in learning how to craft healthier systems of living and working together.

The conference will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. at Ithaca College’s Hill Center. The cost is $30.00; to register, visit www.tompkinschamber.org.

The conference brings together experts in diverse fields to discuss concerns such as new global disease patterns, environmental toxins, the obesity epidemic, untreated preventable diseases and the stresses natural disasters put on our health-care systems. Speakers, consultants and exhibitors will present information on sustainable solutions such as building healthy community infrastructures, improving nutrition and greening medical facilities.

Opening the conference will be Gay Nicholson, program coordinator for Sustainable Tompkins, a coalition of citizens, community organizations, elected officials, educators and professionals from diverse fields working to promote a more sustainable community. Steve Siconolfi, dean of the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance, will discuss “Health Educators as Partners in Sustainability.” The keynote address, “Protecting Health, Climate and Communities through Sustainable Development,” will be delivered by Dr. Jonathan Patz, a leading researcher who has briefed Congress on the health risks associated with climate change.

Other speakers include Sandra Steingraber, author of “Living Downstream: An Ecologist Looks at Cancer and the Environment”; Marie Kulick, senior policy analyst at the Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy; Derek Cabrera, founder/CEO of ThinkWorks, LLC; and Paul Levesque, an associate with HOLT Architects.
