For Prospective Students
Are you interested in becoming an Environmental Studies or Environmental Science major at Ithaca College?
If you are in the process of applying to Ithaca College, please review our website to get a feel for the program of study and opportunities available to students. Contact the Department Chair if you have any specific questions or want to be able to speak to one of our faculty or students directly.
If you are currently a student at Ithaca College and are interested in switching your major to Environmental Studies and Science, please be advised of the new process and criteria for admission to the program:
Application Deadline. Applications will be reviewed twice each semester: at the beginning and prior to the registration period. Applications received after the due date will be reviewed in the next cycle. The deadlines for the 2012-2013 academic year are as follows:
- September 1
- October 15
- February 1
- March 15
Criteria for Acceptance
1. Student must have completed one ENVS course and received a B+ to apply.
2. Application, which will be evaluated for:
a. Demonstration of interest in Environmental Studies or Sciences, and
b. Career goals within the field.
c. Evidence of academic ability. While there is no minimum GPA to apply beyond the requirements of the School of Humanities and Sciences, the committee may consider the student’s overall academic record, including relevant courses taken and performance in those courses.
Please note that fulfilling the requirements does not guarantee admission into the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences. Your application will be reviewed by a committee of Environmental Studies and Sciences faculty.
If you are accepted into the program you will need to plan carefully in order to fulfill all the requirements. Make sure to go over your plan of study with your assigned advisor as soon as you are accepted. (Due to the order in which some required courses must be taken, and the number of semesters you have already been at Ithaca College, you may have to take an extra semester or year.)
Checklist for application
- Unofficial transcript. This can be accessed directly through your Homerconnect account.
- Application form. This can be accessed here through the ENVS website.
- Student must deliver hard copy of application and transcript to ENVS Administrative Office (CNS 257A).
The committee will review applications and notify students via email at two times each semester, either within two weeks of the application deadline or about one week before registration for the following semester, depending on which deadline for submission was met.
If you are accepted, you must complete a Change of Major form you can get at the Registrar’s office, the Humanities and Sciences Dean’s office, or the department administrator. Please note that your major is not officially changed until this form has been approved at the Registrar’s office.
If you choose not to formally change majors in the semester you are accepted, you must reapply at a later date.
