Scholarships and Awards

 Scholarships and Awards

The History Department is pleased to be able to offer a number of scholarships and awards to our students.

Two of these awards require students to apply and submit written work to be examined as part of the evaluation process:

The Robert A. Ryan Prize
The History Department announces a competition for the Robert A. Ryan Prize for next academic year (2013-2014). We typically give the following awards:

• 3 senior awards at up to $4000 each
• 3 junior awards at up to $3000 each
• 3 sophomore awards at up to $2000 each

All applicants must (1) be a history major enrolled for at least one semester of the 2013-2014 academic year, (2) have a minimum GPA of 3.3 in history classes and a 3.3 overall, and (3) have enrolled in a minimum of 9 credits of history at IC. If a student has not completed 9 credits, they must ask their history professors to sign a form attesting to their current course grade(s). If you meet these prerequisites, please submit 3 papers you have written from at least 2 different history classes. In addition, provide a brief cover letter contextualizing your papers and explaining how they illustrate your approach as a student of history.

The deadline for applying for this prize is Friday, March 1, 2013. Please submit your portfolio either in hard copy to Muller 418 or email your submissions to Karin Breuer. Late submissions will not be considered.

The Hal Emery Writing Award
The Hal Emery Writing Award is given in recognition of exemplary written research work in upper level history classes. A call for submissions will be circulated in the spring.

If you have any questions about these or other History Department Scholarships, please contact one of the members of the department’s Scholarships and Awards Committee (Karin Breuer, Lu Liu, and Michael Trotti).
