Teacher Education Programs

Teaching mathematics to elementary, middle, and high-school students is one of the best ways to make a difference in their lives. By making mathematics come alive, a good teacher can open doors for their students, help them become effective problem-solvers, and improve schools and society.

The IC Mathematics Department works closely with the Education Department to offer several pathways to becoming certified to teach mathematics in New York and neighboring states. These programs integrate coursework in education, mathematical content courses, and field-based learning experiences:

By combining mathematics content and education, our students learn mathematics well and blend these with critical education theories and practice. All of the programs include multiple experiences working and teaching in local schools under the supervision of IC faculty and mentor teachers. In addition, the Ithaca College-Frederick Douglas Academy Partnership gives our students an opportunity to have a hands-on urban teaching experience and further their understanding of the issues facing underserved minority students.

The Department maintains strong interest in providing the best, most up-to-date and appropriate education for students preparing to teach secondary school mathematics. Our programs align with documents from professional mathematics organizations including the Principles and Standards for School Mathematics (PSSM) from the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Mathematical Education of Teachers (MET) from the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). They also align well with the New York State Learning Standards for Mathematics, Science, and Technology (MST) that pertain to the field of mathematics.

In addition, Ithaca College is the national coordinating site for COMPASS (Curricular Options in Mathematics Programs for All Secondary Students), a nationwide effort to improve math studies.
