Ithaca College to Kick Off Academic Year with Convocation and Picnic

ITHACA, NY—Ithaca College will officially welcome its incoming class to campus on Monday, Aug. 27, with the annual Convocation ceremony and community picnic. Convocation is slated to begin at 11 a.m. in Ben Light Gymnasium. For the 10th year, the ceremony will be followed by a picnic lunch designed to bring first-year students closer together with faculty, staff and administrators.
 
President Peggy R. Williams will preside over Convocation and deliver the main address. Also offering remarks to the members of the freshman class will be Lawrence M. Alleva ’71, vice chairman of the Ithaca College Board of Trustees; Kathleen Rountree, provost and vice president for academic affairs; and Aaron Bloom ’08, president of the Student Government Association.
 
The ceremony will also recognize three faculty members who have been honored by the college for their outstanding accomplishments: Claire Gleitman, associate professor of English, with the Excellence in Teaching Award; Beth Ellen Clark Joseph, assistant professor of physics, with the    Excellence in Scholarship Award; and Janet Galván, professor of music education, with the Excellence in Service Award.
 
The community picnic will take place after Convocation on the academic quad (rain location: Terrace Dining Hall). The event is intended to familiarize the members of the class of 2011 with their new surroundings and to help build a sense of connection and commitment to the college among all its constituencies.
 
Classes for the fall semester begin on Wednesday, Aug. 29.
