Ithaca College Hosts Constitution Day Presentation On Same-Sex Marriage

ITHACA, NY — Ithaca College will host a panel discussion on the issue of same-sex marriage on Wednesday, Sept. 23. “Approaching the Constitutional Threshold: Ending the Heterosexual Marriage Monopoly?” will take place at 7 p.m. in Textor 102. It is free and open to the public.

The event is being held in observance of Constitution Day, which commemorates the 1787 signing of the U.S. Constitution. It is sponsored by the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Department of Politics.

Panelists will include Sybil Conrad, assistant director of the Campus Center, who legally wed her life partner in California and has since been dealing with the uncertain legal landscape of marital recognition; and Mariette Geldenhuys and L. Richard Stumbar, local attorneys who served as co-counsel for a suit challenging the constitutionality of New York State’s definition of marriage.  The panel will be moderated by Beth Harris, associate professor of politics.
