Ithaca College To Host Discussion On Cross-Racial Coalitions

ITHACA, NY — Assistant professor of sociology Belisa González will reflect on lessons learned from six years of cross-racial organizing in the South during a discussion hosted by the Ithaca College Center for the Study of Culture, Race, and Ethnicity (CSCRE). Her talk, “Cross-Racial Coalitions, Conflict and Keepin On’,” will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 11, at 7 p.m. in Klingenstein Lounge, Egbert Hall. It is free and open to the public.

González spent several years conducting ethnographic field work in Chiapas, Mexico, and working as an interviewer and research analyst for the Medicaid Managed Care Project housed at the University of New Mexico. Her doctoral dissertation used in-depth interviews and participant observation to look at the role that perceived similarities play in cross-racial organizing between African Americans and Latinos in Georgia. At Ithaca College, she has taught courses in Race and Ethnicity, Social Inequality and Community Organizing.

The talk is part of the yearlong CSCRE series titled “Chaos or Community? MLK and the Politics of Resistance.” Borrowing its name from the title of a King book, the series explores some of the themes he wrote about, such as antiracist and antiwar movements; resistance to oppression; critiques of capitalism and poverty; civil disobedience and theologies of liberation.
