Ithaca College Sociologist To Discuss Research On Campus 'Hook Ups'

ITHACA, NY — The project coordinator for a multi-campus study on college students and their mating habits will discuss her research in a talk at Ithaca College. Rebecca Plante will present “Hooking Up On Campus:  Sex in the Little City” on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 7 p.m. in Textor 101. Her talk is free and open to the public.

What is hooking up? Is dating dead? What’s good about hooking up…or not so good? Are heterosexual women more interested in relationships than heterosexual men are? These are some of the questions Plante will explore in discussing her survey and interview data on undergraduate students’ experiences with dating and hooking up. The data was collected from students at a range of institutions across the country, including Stanford University, Arizona State and Ithaca College.

An associate professor of sociology at Ithaca College, Plante is the author of “Sexualities in Context: A Social Perspective” and coeditor of “Sexualities: Identities, Behaviors, and Society.” Forthcoming will be a book on dating for the “Rough Guide” series as well as “Doing Gender Diversity,” a book she is coediting with Lis Maurer, coordinator of the Ithaca College Center for LGBT Education, Outreach and Services.

Plante’s talk is sponsored by the Ithaca College Health Promotion Committee and Department of Sociology. For more information, contact Ann Kolodji, assistant professor of health promotion and physical education, at akolodji@ithaca.edu.
