Biography

I’m a native Ithacan and can recall when Ithaca College was located downtown before the South Hill campus was built. After high school, I studied humanities and sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and then returned to Ithaca for graduate work, completing an M.A.T. in English education and an M.A. in educational psychology, both at Cornell University. Much later, I received an M.L.S. degree in library science from Syracuse University. I taught composition at Arkansas State University and Northern Virginia Community College before coming to Ithaca College in 1981. I currently teach courses in academic writing and argument. The four academic writing textbooks that I’ve co-authored with Mary and William Kennedy have been adopted on over 500 campuses. My wife Nancy and I have two grown children and one child at home.
