Frequently Asked Questions
If I have decided on my occupational goals but am uncertain as to what major would be the best choice, whom can I ask? Where can I find out what I can do career-wise with a particular major?
- Talk to faculty within the department. Faculty members are experts in their fields, so they are very knowledgeable about the opportunities available. This includes information about both common and uncommon career paths of students in the major. They also have connections outside IC with other professionals and alumni in the field that could potentially be beneficial to you!
- Visit the Office of Career Services for a drop-in appointment with a Peer Career Advisor (PCA). PCAs are trained in various career-related topics, so they can help you brainstorm career options for a particular major as well as show you some online resources for further research.
- Check out the “What Can You Do With A Major In…?” sheets on the Career Services website. These sheets outline different employment areas, types of employers, and strategies for success for over 90 majors, even some that we don’t offer here at IC.
- Participate in an Exploratory Career Coaching Group offered by Career Services. You and seven other Exploratory students will meet once a week throughout the fall semester with a professional career counselor who will guide you in researching careers of interest and relating them to academic majors.
