• Requires enough service to make experience significant
• Real-life experience not wholly constructed, and therefore with elements of the unknown and unexpected
• Includes structured reflection during and after the service experience
• Connects and integrates classroom material
• Involves cooperative experiences and promotes skills associated with community involvement and citizenship
