As a first-year student in the School of Humanities and Sciences, you will be eligible to enroll in a four-credit Ithaca Seminar. In these special courses, you will study topics in the liberal arts disciplines while discussing issues faced by first-year students during the transition to college.
Approximately 22 students from various majors and Schools at the College will be enrolled in each section; the small class size helps to create a supportive, small-group experience that gives you a chance to interact with your instructor and your peers. Your seminar instructor may also be your academic adviser. With his or her help, you'll learn to manage the day-to-day business of academic life. The seminars encourage you to see yourself as an active learner by emphasizing critical thinking, collaborative learning, writing and other communication skills. You will work toward a deeper understanding of and tolerance for perspectives outside your own experience. Your seminar will help you integrate academic and co-curricular activities and provide you with an introduction to the whole college experience.
