Honors Curriculum

Honors classes are intensive seminars focusing upon a problem or theme which is investigated and deconstructed from multiple perspectives. These courses utilize fundamental and provocative theories and experiments to help you come up with your own perspective on topics. Often, professors and the program supplement the classroom education with out-of-class activities, such as trips or speakers. Honors students are held more personally responsible for their learning in these seminars.

Many incoming students worry about the extra work involved in honors courses and whether they will be able to manage all of it. We have found that this is a concern of students before they begin the courses, but once they are in the program they find the work manageable.

To graduate with "Honors In Humanities and Sciences," incoming students must complete one 4-credit First Year Seminar, five 3-credit Intermediate Seminars, one 3-credit Junior Year Seminar and one 3-credit Senior Year Seminar, for a total of 25 credits over eight semesters. This averages out to one course each semester, although many honors students opt to double up during one of their earlier semesters to avoid an overload of work during their junior and senior years. It is expected that honors students maintain a 3.0 cumulative average, both in and out of the program.

First Year Seminar (1) -- 4 credits
Intermediate Seminars (5) -- 15 credits
Junior Year Seminar (1) -- 3 credits
Senior Year Seminar (1) -- 3 credits
Total Courses (8) -- 25 credits
