The London Semester

The Ithaca Collge Honors Program announces an exciting new academic initiative - The London Honors Semester.

Beginning in Fall 2010 the Honors Program has offered a comprehensive honors semester every fall at Ithaca College’s beautiful London Center. The London Honors Semester will have three components:

1) A specially designed honors seminar, London as Text, taught by Bill Sheasgreen, director of the London Center. In this highly engaged seminar, the city itself will be the text you study.

2) Choices among a great variety of marvelous liberal arts courses to fill out your semester – Shakespeare, The London Theatre, British Art and Architecture, and many others – that will deeply enrich your education. (And for all you theatre types, participation in the London Honors Semester is designed to be completely compatable with the London Drama Program, including Interrelationships.)

3) A special trip, paid for by the Honors Program, to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, perhaps the most exciting arts festival in the world.

Ithaca College London Centre:

Ithaca College has a campus in London, set in a beautiful building in one of the nicest parts of the city.  There, Ithaca College faculty and British professors teach a broad variety of exciting and challenging courses that are part of the Ithaca College curriculum.  Every course will count directly into your academic program.

London As Text:

The centerpiece of your London Honors Semester will be a 3-credit honors seminar, London as Text, taught by Bill Sheasgreen, director of the ithaca College London Centre.  In this seminar, you will directly encounter the city of London in a variety of ways: cultural, social, political, and artistic.  Your seminar will occasionally meet in a classroom, but most of the time you will be working with your text, the endlessly fascinating cosmopolitan city of London.  This course is an intermediate honors seminar that will count toward your progress through the honors program.

Honors at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival:

Fall London Honors Semester students will travel to Great Britain a week ahead of the beginning of the fall semester.  From there we will travel to Edinburgh, Scotland, where we will experience the world-famous Edinburgh Fringe Festival.  The Honors Program will cover the entire cost of transportation to and from London, accomodations in Edinburgh, and several special events in Edinburgh.

Costs and Accomodations:

Tuition at the London Centre is the same as at the Ithaca College home campus.  All of your financial aid and scholarships can be applied to this program.

You will be responsible for the costs of transportation between London and the United States.  In London, you will rent a flat, probably with other Ithaca College students.  Your ultimate costs will vary, of course, with the exchange rate and how much you spend on travel and entertainment.

How to Apply:

This program is open to all students in the Ithaca College Honors Program and students in honors programs at other colleges or universities.

1- Inform the director that you plan to participate.

2- Attend informational sessions in January.

3- Apply to attend the London Centre through the Office of International Programs.
