Cheers for 50 Years
A 50-year timeline of the School of Humanities and Sciences is on permanent display in the dean’s office at 201 Muller Center. This 35-foot “picture” gives highlights along the way as the school has grown to 20 departments and 82 majors and minors.
The rich array of department and program offerings in celebration of the 50th anniversary ranged from an alumni lecture series sponsored by the biology department to a public lecture, “Historical and Contemporary Causes of the Latin American Migration to the United States,” sponsored by the Latin American studies program. A special display in the Handwerker Gallery provided a historical view of the school in its early years.
Some 270 current and retired faculty and significant others celebrated the school at a gala dinner in Emerson Suites in March. Shirley Hockett, professor emerita of mathematics, was the invited speaker, providing remarks about life in and out of IC.
