The fences at Ise are high enough to
block one's view of the structures they frame, but low enought to permit
glimpses of the structures' thatched roofs. The outer fence is mounted on
a rough stone base and is solid and opaque, the inner fences present slightly
more permeable boundaries. The regularly spaced posts of the outer fence
are adorned in this view with the folded paper talismans or "wishes"
that are associated with Shinto spatial marking, and with cryptomeria branches
that likewise designate sacred zones.
